Title: Making the Invisible Visible: A Communication Approach for Working with Patients with Invisible Illnesses.
Session Description: Clinical encounters with patients with invisible illnesses (e.g. fibromyalgia, myalgic encephalomyelitis, irritable bowel syndrome, etc.) are frequently frustrating for both the patient and the provider. Providers oftentimes feel powerless to help patients with invisible illness and patients frequently feel dismissed and frustrated. In this session, we will explore the therapeutic power of the patient-provider relationship and provide a communication framework to help foster a positive, working patient-provider relationship and, ultimately, to find joy in working with patients with invisible illness
