Amber-Nicole Bird, MD

Amber Bird, MD is an an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. She completed her Bachelor of Science in Biological Anthropology at the University of Michigan and received her MD at Drexel University College of Medicine. She completed her internship and residency at the University of Chicago, where she served as Chief Resident. She completed additional training through the Medical Education Research, Innovation, Teaching, and Scholarship (MERITS) fellowship at the University of Chicago, prior to joining the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania in the Division of General Internal Medicine in 2015. Her clinical interests are in primary care, as well as educational design and innovation.

Since joining faculty, Dr. Bird has been consistently lauded as an outstanding clinician and educator. In her role as Director of Ambulatory Education she recognized a gap in the ambulatory training of Internal Medicine residents and developed a novel ambulatory noon conference series that engages faculty, residents, and students in interactive discussion and is an integral part of the ambulatory curriculum for IM residents. Her skills as an educator and mentor have been recognized through numerous awards, including the Donna McCurdy Faculty Teaching Award, Maurice F. Attie Faculty Teaching Award, and the John M. Eisenberg Teaching Award.  She has also demonstrated an unwavering commitment to high quality clinical care, educational innovation, and health equity.

Using her background in quality improvement, she has been passionate about efforts to reduce inequities in care, and actively mentors residents in the Healthcare Leadership in Quality track on initiatives focused on reducing disparities in trainee-delivered care.

She has served on national Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine and ACGME Equity Matters committees aimed at driving change in graduate medical education in the areas of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
